Moses Shannon was not the father of John C. Shannon (1816-1896)

Many published trees online have John as the son of Moses Shannon and cite his name as ‘John Cleveland’.   Moses was married to Jemima Cleveland and died in the 1830’s.   But there is no record that Moses and his wife had a son born as early as 1816. The 1830 census shows his oldest son was under 10.  John’s mother is listed as Patsey in numerous documents, and she lived in Winston and Attala Counties, MS when older while at the same time Jemima was alive and well elsewhere.  We can confirm that Patsey was John’s mother, and none of the information indicates any association between these two women.   Patsey’s maiden name has been documented as ‘Cockerham’, which probably accounts for the ‘C’ in John’s name.
